2011 marks a very special moment in two-wheeled motorsport as the 50th Anniversary of World Championship Grand Prix racing for Yamaha. As part of a series of ongoing activities to celebrate this landmark Yamaha Factory Racing will run a special livery, the ?YZR-M1 WGP50th Anniversary Edition? for the Assen TT and Laguna Seca races.

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and 2010 Rookie of the Year Ben Spies will unveil the livery at a special event on Wednesday 22nd June close to the Assen circuit

The unique red and white livery design pays homage to the iconic Yamaha Factory Racing liveries of the past with a modern twist. The red and white livery will be used by Yamaha Factory Racing team riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies. The colours will also appear on all Yamaha staff and team crew as well as the Yamaha Factory Racing team?s pit box.

A special 50th Anniversary logo is also being used this season. The logo is proudly displayed on the 2011 YZR-M1 fuel tank, on all Yamaha Factory Racing Team uniforms, within the pit garage of riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies and also on the Yamaha Factory Racing trucks.

Jorge Lorenzo Yamaha Factory Racing Rider

"I love these colors, they really have a historic significance. Read, Agostini, they all ran similar color schemes when they won so the opportunity to use it on the YZR-M1 is really nice. It?s a very special year for Yamaha and we hope that these colors will give us luck in these two races."

Ben Spies Yamaha Factory Racing Rider

"I?m really excited about running with these colors. It?s a big year for Yamaha and my first with the Factory Team. To be able to run a special livery like that in Assen and also for my home race at Laguna is awesome. I think it?s going to look really good and I?m looking forward to everyone being able to see it."

Shigeto Kitagawa President of Yamaha Motor Racing

"It is my pleasure and honor to announce that we will unveil the ?YZR-M1 WGP50th Anniversary Edition? at the Assen TT and Laguna Seca race.

"I believe that the newly designed Red and White livery not only recollects our brilliant memories in the past but also makes us feel the power to create new history.

Moto GP - Valentino Rossi Wins the Czech Grand Prix

The Italian Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi took the victory at the latest Moto GP Grand Prix in the Czech Republic after defeating Ducati rider Casey Stoner despite the Australian's good performance leading the competition. Toni Elas who is also a Ducati rider arrived in second place after a sensational race.

With this achievement Rossi adds twenty-five extra points to his name and now is fifty points away from the Australian Stoner while there are only six races remaining to finish the championship.

Other two strong rivals are the Spaniards; Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) and Dani Pedrosa (Honda) who did not have a very impressive race and finished in tenth and fifteenth position respectively. Unfortunately for Pedrosa he is no more a candidate to win this year's title. Another unexpected finish was that of Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) who finished in ninth place.

The Czech Grand Prix was considered a new chapter in the fight both riders Stoner and Rossi put up at Laguna Seca a few weeks ago. During the exit in pole position Stoner quickly took advantage over Rossi who led a small group behind him, among them were John Hopkins (Kawasaki) and, after him, Anthony West (Kawasaki), Chris Vermeulen (Suzuki) and Pedrosa.

In the third lap Elas reached the eighth position while Pedrosa began to fade behind to the ninth place and in the following lap Stoner just could not keep up the paste and also felt behind the group situation that favored Rossi was able to lead with a seven second of advantage.

By the fifth lap Pedrosa had already lost enough positions and was in thirteenth place. The peak of the competition was reached only within seconds after when Stoner completely lost control of his motorcycle falling to the ground. Despite his actions to continue racing and setting his motorcycle on track, he became aware that the right part of the handlebars was broken and he had to withdraw. Rossi was then advised by his teammates that Stoner was no longer behind him and he had the track completely for himself.

For the remaining part of the race the rider Toni Elas showed an impressive display of speed reaching the second place and keeping it until the very end of the race; this was without a doubt an unforgettable weekend for the young rider. Meanwhile, Randy de Puniet also faced mechanical problems and finished last.

Currently, the Italian Valentino Rossi leads the Moto GP World Championship with a total of 237 points followed by the defending champion, the Australian racing star Casey Stoner, who is also one of the favorites to win the title. The Spaniard Dani Pedrosa remains third, with 172 points and Jorge Lorenzo is in fourth place with 120 points. Even though the championship is not over yet we can see how the pieces are adjusting as we start to see whom the next world champion may be.

Hopkins Confirmed With Suzuki In World Superbikes, Could Run #21

Crescent Suzuki finally announced their full line up in World Superbikes for 2012, issuing a press release confirming the addition of John Hopkins to the team, to be racing alongside Leon Camier. The announcement of Hopkins as rider was no real surprise, and had been expected almost from the moment that Crescent announced their intention of racing in World Superbikes next season.

It was Suzuki's official confirmation - equally expected - that they would be withdrawing from MotoGP that allowed Crescent and Hopkins to finalize the deal. The American had been holding on to hopes of a return to the MotoGP series, either with the Rizla Suzuki squad or on a satellite Honda, but with Stefan Bradl taking the LCR slot and no Suzuki, the only options Hopkins had in MotoGP were a CRT ride. His loyalty to the team and the level of competitiveness expected from the Crescent Suzuki team (which, though it will not have any factory support, will be working closely with the legendary Japanese firm Yoshimura, see separate press release below) meant that the logical choice for the America was to switch to World Superbikes for 2012.

Moto GP

The day clearly belonged to one driver and one driver only - Casey Stoner. The main Aussie of the Moto GP show silenced all his critics. Unusually for the 21 year old team Ducati rider he had a bad start. Slipping down the order to seventh position. This never seemed to phase the guy aptly described as "a genius" by his project manager Livio Suppo. Instead of tip-toeing around the drenched circuit and waiting for things to unfold ahead of him, Stoner went ahead and in the next 3 laps worked his way up to third place. By halfway through the race he'd passed the race leader Colin Edwards (who had led the race from pole position up to that point) and from there on in he never looked in the slightest discomfort with riding in the changing conditions, changing conditions because the track had started drying out to the point that a clear dry racing line had formed on the track.

Chris Vermeulen (are the Aussies taking over?) had to repay his team because he had crashed his bike 3 times over the weekend, so finishing 3rd was good enough for him. Having started way back in 12th position he had an excellent start and managed to pass Valentino Rossi in the closing stages of the race. Rossi brought his bike in to 4th place to at least keep the fight for the championship between himself and Stoner more than alive. Rossi had a difficult race firstly not having the pace of Casey Stoner and also tearing his tyres up in the latter half of the race due to the track drying out.

John Hopkins caught Rossi at the end but couldn't put in a decent passing move on the 7 times Donington winner so had to settle for 5th.

The rest of the top 10 finishers were Randy de Puniet on his Kawasaki in 6th, still recovering from his knee surgery. Alex Barros passed Dani Pedrosa for 7th place on the last lap of the race. Pedrosa started well on his Honda but slipped down the order and seemed a bit easy for the other riders to get past. Behind Dani Pedrosa were Alex Hoffman and Marco Melandri, with Melandri seeming to have made an incorrect tyre choice since he came to the party in the latter stages as the track dried out.

Bimota DB9 Brivido ? The Best Looking Diavel Yet

Astute readers this week would have noticed our coverage of the Bimota DB10 Bimotard, and wondered how the boutique Italian firm jumped from the DB8 to the DB10 designation. Well yes Virginia, there is a DB9. The Bimota DB9 Brivido arrived to the 2011 EICMA show with slightly less fanfare, but its still a classic example of the motorcycle company's current design and ethos. Based around the 162hp Testastretta 11 motor from the Ducati Diavel, the DB9 Brivido continues the aesthetics that began with the Ducati Superbike 1198-powered DB8, and works in the more streetable maintenance-friendly Diavel motor.

2011 Jerez Combined MotoGP And Moto2 Test Day 3 Unofficial Times: Redding Leads A Smaller Field

The final day of testing for the MotoGP and Moto2 classes for 2012 wrapped up at Jerez under clear skies and slightly cooler conditions, but still perfect for testing Grand Prix motorcycles. The field had thinned out considerably for the final day, with the Colin Edwards' NGM Forward team having gone home, and Carlos Checa having flown out to Moscow to present the Russian round of World Superbikes the evening before, while the Forward and Pons Moto2 teams had also decided to pack up after the second day.

The lack of other riders made no difference to the top of the Moto2 timesheets, Scott Redding once again fastest aboard the Marc VDS Racing Kalex for the third day in a row. Bradley Smith's improvement on the 2012 Tech 3 bike also continued, the Englishman cutting another half a second off his time from yesterday, and ending just a tenth behind Redding. Gino Rea matched the pace of Smith, the young Londoner continuing to test for the Gresini team. Redding's teammate Mika Kallio was 4th fastest on the day, half a second quicker than Tech 3's Xavier Simeon.

Official At Last: Suzuki Out Of MotoGP, But Only "Temporarily"

Suzuki has at last confirmed what we have all suspected since the middle of this year, and what veteran journalist Michael Scott reported in GPWeek: The Japanese factory is to pull out of the MotoGP series from 2012. The press release expresses their intention to keep working on their 1000cc MotoGP machine, with a view to returning to the series in 2014.

Though the optimism expressed is laudable, making a return to the series after pulling out is hard enough under normal circumstances, but given the combination of the global financial crisis, the earthquake and tsunami back in March, and the continuing corporate difficulties over the 19.9% stake in the company sold to Volkswagen, coming back to MotoGP could pose serious difficulties. Added to this are the rule changes currently proposed and expected. The move to 1000cc in 2012 has long been known, but Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta's announcement that he wants everyone racing under a single set of rules, including a rev limit and a spec ECU, means that waiting could be the smart thing to do. Once the rules have been settled, then it could be time to start work on a bike for racing in MotoGP.
