2012 Silverstone WSBK Friday Round Up: Rain, Rumours and Results

One of the paddock's worst-kept secrets was the cancellation of the Portimao round at the end of the 2012 World Superbike championship. Luckily for fans of the Portugese circuit, the track was confirmed as definitely being on the calendar, as the financial penalties for its not being held were greater than the costs. This, however, wasn't the biggest rumour to hit the paddock as, fresh on the heels of Ben Spies being almost certain to join the BWM Motorrad Italia team next year alongside Marco Melandri, we were treated with hints that Valentino Rossi would possibly be joining the Superbike paddock on a Yamaha in 2015.

After coming under pressure from the Tech 3 Yamahas of Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow in the opening laps, he was beginning to pull away when the problem occurred.

After making promising progress in qualifying yesterday Team San Carlo Honda Gresini were unable to reap the fruits of their labour in the race. Michele Pirro tumbling out of the race on the first lap.

Michele Pirro (DNF)
"They say things come in threes and unfortunately that is the case for me today with my third DNF in a row – this time after contact with De Puniet in the first corner. It is unfortunate but I don't want to be ndgative about it and I am sure that better times are ahead for me and the guys in the team."

Fausto Gresini
"Unfortunately for Michele there is not much we can say about his race because he collided with De Puniet in the first corner and crashed. It is not an easy time for Team San Carlo Honda Gresini but we have to be patient, look forwards and stay positive because at times like this it is important to grit your teeth and do everything possible to turn things around."

Stoner proud fight against Lorenzo-Pedrosa

INbolnet -   Will retire at the end of this season, Casey Stoner did not assert that there are many things he would miss from MotoGP. But there was one who would he be proud of, namely the fight against Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.

His third race with the GP125 and GP250 before going up to the MotoGP class. Stoner and Pedrosa entered the highest level in 2006. Two years later, Lorenzo joined.

"Indeed I am happy to grow with them. We also have had several classes racing together," said Stoner. "Our competition was also fantastic. Rivalry we have achieved a high level."

Since 2008, the trio has always been ranked in the top four. They are also likely to dominate the podium this season terpuncak.

"After retirement, I will remember those moments. I'm proud to be part of this fight, especially with them. Any podium that we achieved together is really impressive," said the Australian rider.

Lorenzo himself thought that their rivalry in the GP125 and GP250 make all three continued to dominate until now. "I think we are a strong rider. We have the motivation is so high, especially now that we have a very competitive bike. For us, it is very hard to outdo each other this season."

The only rider to win more than one victory since 2008 is Valentino Rossi. Since then, Rossi has collected 17 victories. But he has been absent from the podium the highest since 2010 Malaysia GP ago.

Casey Stoner Laguna Seca 2012

Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner heads into the summer break on a high after winning his fourth race of the year by making a wise tyre choice on a sunny day at the U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The win was Stoner’s second in a row and third overall at the tortuous circuit within sight of the Pacific Ocean east of Monterey, California, making him the winningest rider at the track.

And it also allowed him to take five points out of the championship lead of Lorenzo. Stoner, who will spend his summer break traveling around the U.S. with his family, now has 173 points to 182 for Pedrosa and 205 for Lorenzo.

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Race winner
“It's been a difficult weekend for us in general, especially trying to make the hard tyre work. So for the race I decided to go with the soft option and be a little more careful with the tyre, keep a little more traction and not spin so much. At the beginning of the race I tried to move to the front, but Dani and Jorge were riding very good lines and it was impossible to get past. I decided to slow the lap times a little and try to save the tyres until the end and then we could start to come back. I was confident for the entire race that I had enough pace for the win, we just needed to make sure the tyre would last until the end. When we got to the front we put in some good laps and pulled some small advantage and just continued from there. I'm very, very happy and a big thanks to all the team.”

Royal Enfield Understands Motorcycle Branding

An integral component to demand generation, the business side of this kind of branding is where marketing becomes less objective and more subjective. To be frank, the reason we have a scarcity of good ad campaigns in the motorcycle industry is because few motorcycle companies are a) willing to recognize the importance of lifestyle branding (for some, it's a four-letter word), b) willing to acknowledge the craftsmanship that is involved with that kind of marketing campaign (or worse, recognize it if they saw it), and c) are willing to pay for marketing managers with that skill set (they aren't cheap). Unsurprisingly, the brands that do see the value in running these kind of campaigns are seeing it payoff in dividends.

Almost fell, Lorenzo Admit Best Stoner at Laguna Seca

INbolnet -   Despite failing to win the U.S. MotoGP, Jorge Lorenzo left Laguna Seca circuit remains as head of the standings. Start from pole position, Lorenzo left the Honda duo, Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa from the start of racing.

Before the race, Stoner chose the rear tires (soft) when other riders chose the hard rear tire (hard). The strategy was predicted to fail is very powerful. Lorenzo was overtaken by Stoner when leaving a 10 lap race.

"From the beginning, I have endeavored to widen the distance. But I nearly fell on the Corner Corkscrew, and it seems to be its own motivation for Casey. He overtook me just one lap after the incident," said Lorenzo.

Yamaha Factory Racing rider claimed he could not keep the rhythm of racing again since the incident. He also said that the soft tire seemed a more appropriate strategy.

"However, this time Casey is the best and the fastest. It's not my momentum," continued the rider nicknamed Por Fuera.

Although disappointed, Lorenzo got the advantage of four points from Pedrosa, who finished in third position. "Being on the podium is very important. We managed to keep the spot from Dani," said Lorenzo's team manager, Wilco Zeelenberg. "Now we will rest and prepare for the Indianapolis series."

MotoGP will re-visited the realm of the United States on August 17 to 19 next at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Circuit.

Andrea Dovizioso Get His Best Fourth at Laguna Seca

Andrea Dovizioso Laguna Seca 2012

Dovizioso made one of his trademark blistering launches off the start line to quickly seize fifth place from Crutchlow on the run to the tight first corner.

The Italian then quickly found a fart and consistent rhythm in front of a sun-drenched Californian crowd o f 52,677 fans to mount a charge towards Factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies. Spies needed to call on all his vast home track knowledge to keep Dovizioso at bay. But a crash for the American exiting the spectacular Corkscrew section on lap 22 put Dovizioso into fourth position.

Dovizioso though never had the opportunity to relax, as a determined Crutchlow had remained glued to the back of his YZR-M1 machine right from the first lap.

Andrea Dovizioso 4th – 121 points:
“It would have been nice to have kept the podium sequence going for a fourth race in a row but we have to be very satisfied with today's result because it was the best we could achieve when you consider the pace the top three have shown all weekend. Ben was doing a fantastic race and credit to him because he wasn't in the best physical condition. It is a big pity that he crashed because at the end of the race I am sure we could have had a really nice battle. It wasn't easy to stay with him and I was pushing really hard but when Ellison crashed there was a lot of sand on the track and I hit it and los t some time. It is a positive result and this busy period in the Championship has been very successful but we have to say the gap to the top three was very big. We head to the summer break confident for the rest of the season and ready to return in Indianapolis refreshed and looking forward to improving our performance.”

Duo Interview: Nicky Hayden And Crew Chief Juan Martinez On Working Together

The second pair of subjects in our series of interviews with rider and crew chief are Nicky Hayden and Juan Martinez. After Hayden left Honda and joined Ducati, he was first paired with Cristhian Pupulin - or Pipi, as he is called by the Italians in Ducati - but after a few races, Ducati switched Pupulin's role and recruited Juan Martinez to take over as crew chief. Since then, the relationship has blossomed, with the Kentuckian and the Spaniard building a good understanding of each other and getting to grips well with the difficult Ducati.

We spoke to Hayden and Martinez at the Sachsenring, ahead of the German GP there. During an interesting 15 minutes, we spoke about how the pair started to work together, what it takes to build a strong relationship between crew chief and rider, and where Hayden and Martinez feel the other excel. It provided a fascinating insight into the way that rider and crew chief work together, and the level of trust and respect the two must have for it to be a succes.

MotoMatters.com: I want to talk about your relationship, the two of you, and the way that you work together. Because to me, the relationship between rider and crew chief is so crucial. First of all, Nicky, when you joined Ducati, you had Pipi [the nickname of Cristhian Pupulin, a long-time Ducati engineer] as a crew chief. That lasted three or four races, but communication was difficult because of the language barrier. How did you end up paired with Juan?

Nicky Hayden: Well, Pipi was a great crew chief. His knowledge was very good, but the language was just too hard. We couldn't communicate, that was very difficult. So we could see after a few races it wasn't going to work. So we started to look around, see who was out there that spoke English, and also somebody that knew Italian.

I couldn't have had a better situation, because Juan had already been at Ducati. So he was able to jump in five races into the season and already have an understanding of the bike, the team. Speaks perfect English, perfect Italian. [Juan Martinez protests modestly] So I was really lucky.
