2011 Motegi MotoGP Thursday Round Up - Of Fear, Weight Distribution And A Change In Routine

It was billed by the respected Italian website GPOne.com as "The Grand Prix Of Fear" and finally it's here. Unless something extremely untoward happens - highly unlikely, but the zone is one of the most geologically active regions in the world - by Friday evening, everyone will have gotten over themselves and we'll be talking about bikes on track again.

There are still plenty of signs of advanced paranoia in the paddock, however. The Italian media contingent is reduced to just a few brave souls, while the Spanish media is a little better represented, but still much thinner on the ground. The English-speaking media is actually a little more numerous than originally planned: out of sheer frustration with the panic-mongering being spread about by some of the more paranoid sections of the paddock, veteran MotoGP journalist Michael Scott has added Motegi to his itinerary, a race he would otherwise have covered from home.

corser_imola_award_newsTroy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) was already the record points scorer in the Superbike World Championship before the Nrburgring round in early September, but he broke through the 4,000 points barrier at the German round, reaching 4,001.5 by the end of the day.

In honour of this new high watermark for any individual rider Infront Motor Sports’ Paolo Ciabatti presented Troy with a special commemorative trophy on the grid at the Imola WSBK race last weekend.

After the Italian race Troy now has 4,005.5 career points, with the next highest scorer being Noriyuki Haga with 3668. Four time champion Carl Fogarty has 3020, Aaron Slight 2834.5, Troy Bayliss 2442, Colin Edwards 2393.5, Pierfrancesco Chili 2381.5 and recent retiree James Toseland 2098. Only those eight riders have scored over 2,000 points.

An impressive 23 riders have scored more than 1000 championship points to date.

Rider Media Training Wins The Day

From the Berkeley PR Blog: an interesting PR take on the way MotoGP riders handled the Japanese GP questions at Brno. Following flat refusals to attend the GP a few weeks ago, the rider’s positions have softened as contractual realities have bitten, and the Dorna report on the radiation levels in Japan has been issued. Damian Cudlin To Substitute For Loris Capirossi At Motegi

The announcement by Honda at Aragon that the Japanese factory would be fielding two wildcards at Motegi, in the form of veteran rider Shinichi Itoh and test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi, as a display of solidarity with the tsunami-stricken region of East Japan meant that for once this year, it looked like there would be a grid of 19 riders in MotoGP. But a crash early in the race saw Loris Capirossi fall heavily on the shoulder he had previously injured at Assen, and the Italian was advised not to race in Japan by famous paddock physician Dr Claudio Costa. With Capirossi out, it looked like MotoGP would be down to 18 riders once again.
