Exciting Battle, Cal Crutchlow Finish Fifth at Laguna Seca

Cal Crutchlow Laguna Seca 2012

British rider Crutchlow couldn't have put in a bigger effort to try and take fourth, but Dovizioso was once again brilliantly calm and collected under pres sure. In what has now become a familiar sight in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, Cal Crutchlow were locked in an exciting battle together with his teammate right until the chequered flag.

Cal Crutchlow 5th – 106 points:
“I'm pretty happy with another solid finish inside the top five and that is a big improvement on last year where I struggled a lot at this track. All weekend I was inside the top six so to finish fifth and have another strong battle with Andrea is good for the Championship. Credit to Andrea again because he was faultless and it didn't seem to matter how much pressure I put on him, he remained ice cool and didn't put a foot wrong to give me a chance of passing. Any pas s would have been a desperate lunge and I certainly wasn't going to risk taking us both out in such an important race for Yamaha and Monster. It was a good battle with Ben for the first 20 laps and I feel sorry for him because it was building up to be a good fight between the three of us at the end. It was bad luck for Ben and I did everything I could without being able to take fourth from Andrea. It has been a great first half to the season for me. I've finished all 10 races and that was the consistency I was looking for. I'm now staying in America for a well earned break before coming back strong and confident for Indianapolis.”

Casey Stoner tames the corkscrew

Casey Stoner Laguna Seca 2012

Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner heads into the summer break on a high after winning his fourth race of the year by making a wise tyre choice on a sunny day at the U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The win was Stoner’s second in a row and third overall at the tortuous circuit within sight of the Pacific Ocean east of Monterey, California, making him the winningest rider at the track.

And it also allowed him to take five points out of the championship lead of Lorenzo. Stoner, who will spend his summer break traveling around the U.S. with his family, now has 173 points to 182 for Pedrosa and 205 for Lorenzo.

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Race winner
“It's been a difficult weekend for us in general, especially trying to make the hard tyre work. So for the race I decided to go with the soft option and be a little more careful with the tyre, keep a little more traction and not spin so much. At the beginning of the race I tried to move to the front, but Dani and Jorge were riding very good lines and it was impossible to get past. I decided to slow the lap times a little and try to save the tyres until the end and then we could start to come back. I was confident for the entire race that I had enough pace for the win, we just needed to make sure the tyre would last until the end. When we got to the front we put in some good laps and pulled some small advantage and just continued from there. I'm very, very happy and a big thanks to all the team.”

2012 Laguna Seca MotoGP FP3 Result: Lorenzo Tops Fog-Hit Session

The morning fog that is a normal part of most mornings at Laguna Seca was a little thicker and hung around for longer than usual on Saturday morning, causing the AMA session which precedes MotoGP to be rescheduled, but burning off just enough for some MotoGP bikes to go out once FP3 started. The track was still greasy from the mist, the spot under the bridge on the front straight causing a particular problem, but a few brave souls who really needed the track time went out. That was Steve Rapp, especially, as the Attack Kawasaki CRT bike had not turned a wheel on a racetrack until FP1 on Friday, and the improvement by the bike showed, Rapp quickly improving his times from yesterday by a significant margin.

Ten minutes before the session ended, the fog had lifted sufficiently for all of the riders to start thinking of venturing out. Ben Spies was the first brave soul, joining Rapp, Ivan Silva and James Ellison who had already been circulating for a while. Spies soon took top spot, but once his Factory Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo hit the track, it was the Spaniard who dominated, getting well down into the 1'21s to end up topping the timesheets by over eight tenths of a second. Spies finished in 2nd, ahead of Ducati's Nicky Hayden and Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow, while Valentino Rossi was 5th.

2012 Laguna Seca MotoGP Warm Up Result: Stoner Edges Lorenzo In Crash-Filled Session

MotoGP warm up was delayed by an hour because of fog. The fog had left the track a little greasy in spots, as Nicky Hayden crashed at Turn 5 on his out lap, and later in the session, both Alvaro Bautista and Jorge Lorenzo went down at Turn 11. Lorenzo's crash did not slow him down: he led for most of the session, only losing out at the very end, when Casey Stoner sneaked past by one thousandth of a second, the smallest possible margin. Lorenzo ended up 2nd, ahead of Dani Pedrosa and the inseparable Monster Tech 3 Yamaha paring of Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow.

Steve Rapp, failed to get within the 107% of the pole time on the Attack Kawasaki wildcard CRT bike, and as he has not managed to do so in any of the sessions so far this weekend, will not be allowed to start. Rapp and Attack Kawasaki will get a second chance in three weeks' time, at Indianapolis.

MotoGP: Crashes Define Race at Laguna Seca

Another foggy Californian morning, another sunny Californian afternoon. MotoGP is in Laguna Seca this weekend for the US GP, which started off with the surprise announcement that Ben Spies would not be returning to the factory Yamaha squad next season. With Spies’ departure from Yamaha, his seat at the factory team is officially up for grabs now, which has lead to increase in speculation that Rossi could return to the Japanese factory. Whether that is ...

Casey Stoner Just 0.074 Second from the Pole

Casey Stoner Laguna Seca 2012

Casey Stoner spent most of the session working on hard tyres and kept the softer slicks for the last five minutes, when he managed to improve his lap times by almost half a second and take second place on the grid with 1'20.628, just 0.074 second from the pole.

Casey Stoner
"I'm disappointed as I think we definitely had the potential for pole position. We spent most of the session with the hard tyre trying to improve our pace, we've been struggling with it all season when the temperatures aren't high enough to get it working and we had made a few steps and weren't too far off the pace. Then we put on the soft tyre and unfortunately we never got a clean lap. There was always a CRT bike in the way and considering we're 3-4 seconds a lap quicker than them, you come up on them pretty quick, no matter how big a gap you give them. Every lap was spoiled which is very frustrating as I really feel we could have been on pole but we'll have to settle for where we are. Tyre choice for the race will depend on the weather conditions tomorrow, I think we have the pace and longevity in the tyre for the soft, but if it's hot then we may have to try and make the hard work."

Andrea Dovizioso Get His Best Fourth at Laguna Seca

Andrea Dovizioso Laguna Seca 2012

Dovizioso made one of his trademark blistering launches off the start line to quickly seize fifth place from Crutchlow on the run to the tight first corner.

The Italian then quickly found a fart and consistent rhythm in front of a sun-drenched Californian crowd o f 52,677 fans to mount a charge towards Factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies. Spies needed to call on all his vast home track knowledge to keep Dovizioso at bay. But a crash for the American exiting the spectacular Corkscrew section on lap 22 put Dovizioso into fourth position.

Dovizioso though never had the opportunity to relax, as a determined Crutchlow had remained glued to the back of his YZR-M1 machine right from the first lap.

Andrea Dovizioso 4th – 121 points:
“It would have been nice to have kept the podium sequence going for a fourth race in a row but we have to be very satisfied with today's result because it was the best we could achieve when you consider the pace the top three have shown all weekend. Ben was doing a fantastic race and credit to him because he wasn't in the best physical condition. It is a big pity that he crashed because at the end of the race I am sure we could have had a really nice battle. It wasn't easy to stay with him and I was pushing really hard but when Ellison crashed there was a lot of sand on the track and I hit it and los t some time. It is a positive result and this busy period in the Championship has been very successful but we have to say the gap to the top three was very big. We head to the summer break confident for the rest of the season and ready to return in Indianapolis refreshed and looking forward to improving our performance.”

Nicky Hayden Expected More than Eight

Nicky Hayden Laguna Seca 2012

Nicky Hayden only set 1:21.734 for his best lap on the Laguna Seca qualifying session. The Ducati rider hope for better result than eight. After a foggy morning, the afternoon session was in a normal condition. Unfortunately, Hayden didn't manage to find the best setup.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 8th (1:21.734)
"After the performance we had in the race at Mugello and then again in the test, we expected to be a lot closer to the front than this. It’s a bit frustrating to be over a second back, especially at a little track like this where even three or four tenths is a lot. Tonight we’ll decide if we want to make big changes for tomorrow or try to refine what we have, and the main priority will be to settle on a tyre. The morning warm-up might not be very useful if it’s foggy again, but we’ll see what tomorrow brings and give it our best shot."
