Friday Summary at Assen: Of Tricky Surfaces, Fast Riders, & Career Choices

Assen’s surface is pretty good when it’s dry, and it’s not too bad when it’s wet, but this is 2012, and there’s a MotoGP race this weekend, so of course, the conditions are as bad as they can possibly be. For Assen, that means a few spots of rain here and there, just enough to create patches damp enough to catch out the unwary, or even the wary, as Casey Stoner found out this morning. ...

MotoGP: Stop-and-Go Qualifying at Assen

With the Dutch TT taking place on a Saturday, instead of the customary Sunday afternoon for race days, the schedule for MotoGP has been shifted ahead a day, and accordingly qualifying comes to us from a Friday. A pleasant way to end the work-week, the Dutch weather apparently didn’t get the memo before filing its TPS report of off-and-on rain, which made for an interesting qualifying session. Giving riders fifteen minutes of dry track, a ...

Bradl Enjoys His First Outing at Assen Day One

Stefan Bradl Assen 2012

The Dutch track provided largely sunny and dry conditions for the first day of free practices at the slightly revamped surface which hosts the seventh round of the 2012 calendar.

LCR Honda racer Stefan Bradl had a difficult 2011 Moto2 race in Assen and he is not a big fan of the 4.542km track but he made a positive first appearance at “The Cathedral” circuit aboard his RC213V posting the 11th fastest lap time (1’35.337) in a very close afternoon session with 10 riders in less than half second.

Bradl: “This morning we have struggled a lot with the bike and we were far away from our perfect set up and at the end of the first session I was a bit worried. I had no idea of what we should improve to be back in our standard shape. But in the second outing we made a good progression gaining much more confidence. The bike was easier to ride but I must improve on section one which is the main issue at the moment. If you look at the classification we are only 11th but if you check the lap times we are very close to the top ten”.

Trackside Tuesday: Patience is a Virtue

One of the great things about the support classes in Grand Prix motorbike racing is the depth of the competition. While there are a handful of favorites in each class, we generally don’t have the Three Alien situation of MotoGP. Once a rider leaves that broader talent and equipment pool for the premier class however, his potential results are limited by the bike he lands on. Alvaro Bautista paid his dues for two years on ...

Before he was a fixture in the MotoGP paddock, our main-man Scott Jones had to swing a lens just like everyone else: sans a GP photo credential. MotoGP Rule Changes As Expected: Rookie Rule, Single-Bike Scrapped, But Restrictions On Factory Bikes Introduced

Much was expected of this Friday's meeting of the Grand Prix Commission, but in the end, the decisions taken were relatively minor. Dorna, IRTA, the FIM and the MSMA agreed on a number of proposals which had widely been expected, but made no real progress on the major rule changes expected for the 2014 or 2015 season.

The rule change with the biggest immediate impact was the dropping of the Rookie Rule, as we reported during the Silverstone round of MotoGP. The dropping of the Rookie Rule, which prevents new entries into the MotoGP class from going straight to a factory team, opens the way for Marc Marquez to join the factory Repsol Honda team next season. Contrary to popular opinion, however, the rule was not dropped at the request of HRC, but rather of the Honda satellite teams themselves, both Lucio Cecchinello and Fausto Gresini fearing the disruption that Marquez would bring for just a single year.

While the Rookie Rule was scrapped, a couple of other proposals which had been feared were also dropped. The MSMA proposal to go to a single bike - as is the case in Moto2, Moto3 and WSBK - was dropped after opposition from the teams. A proposal to ban the use of carbon brakes was also dropped, especially after pressure on Brembo and Nissin elicited promises to examine the price structure of their products.

Positive First Day for Hector Barbera in Holland

Hector Barbera Assen 2012

Just few days after the British Grand Prix, the Pramac Ducati Team was back on track in Holland today, with Spaniard Hèctor Barberà showing a good pace at the historic Assen circuit.

In unusually dry conditions, the Green Energy Team's sole rider started off the day in 7th place in the morning free practice and hoped to improve further in the afternoon. However this was not to be as he was only able to better his morning time by 0.020 seconds, slipping back through the order after a small crash.
The Spaniard is confident that he can move up the timesheets tomorrow, using the setup of the bike with which he crashed during the free practice, due to a mistake while he was changing gear.

Tomorrow’s final practice and qualifying sessions are expected to be run in dry conditions and this should be a great weather forecast for the Green Team.

Hèctor Barberà – Pramac Racing Team Rider –

“It was a satisfying day for us. In the morning session I had a good setup on my Ducati Desmosedici and I was able to stop the clock in 1’35.296, finishing in 7th place.
Unfortunately during the second free practice, I made a mistake at the entrance of a corner while I was changing gear and I crashed out. This made us change our initial plans because we lost some time fixing the second bike. Despite this small hitch I’m confident with my crew’s work and I know that we could have a more brilliant qualifying day, tomorrow.”

Francesco Guidotti – Pramac Racing Team Manager
“Despite the small crash at the beginning of the afternoon’s session, we are gratified with today’s result. The bright spot of this warm Thursday in Holland was that the top ten riders were all within less then four tenths of a second, so tomorrow we will have a hard-fought one-hour qualifying session and we hope to wrap up in the front rows.”

2012 Assen MotoGP FP3 Result: Pedrosa Tops Rain-Affected Session

Dani Pedrosa topped a rain-hit practice session on Friday morning, leading the session once the brief rain shower which hit in the early part of practice had passed. The shower passed quickly, leaving the track fairly dry, with just a few wet patches, one of which caught Casey Stoner out, the Repsol Honda man suffering a huge highside on a damp patch at De Bult. Stoner was slow to get up, but eventually rejoined the session, ending in 6th.

Jorge Lorenzo finished in 2nd, just behind Pedrosa, and ahead of San Carlo Gresini's Alvaro Bautista. Despite his still painful ankle, Cal Crutchlow put his Monster Tech 3 Yamaha into 4th, ahead of teammate Andrea Dovizioso and the banged up Stoner. Stefan Bradl posted the 7th fastest time on the LCR Honda, ahead of the Ducatis of Nicky Hayden and Hector Barbera, while Ben Spies rounded out the top 10.

The final standings in the session did not carry that much significance, however. The mixed conditions meant that placings were determined to some extent by timing and the willingness to push. After seeing Casey Stoner crash so badly, there may have been some riders building in a small safety margin.
